Tai Sing Yeh returned without much fanfare at the Sha Tin barrier trials yesterday, but you can bet your proverbial bottom dollar he will be back with a bang at the races after he cruised through his 1,050m heat on the all-weather track. Douglas Whyte was almost statuesque as he sat quietly on the exciting sprinter, gliding down the straight to finish a comfortable fourth in the opening trial, which was taken out by stablemate Friendly Gains in a slick 62.02 seconds.

Friendly Gains also trialled well and trainer Manfred Man Ka-leung will be more than pleased with the performance of his speedsters leading into the new season.

A winner of five Happy Valley races last term, the popular Tai Sing Yeh hasn't been sighted since he finished fifth to Perfect Style on closing night on July 14.

By then a taxing preparation had taken its toll and the four-year-old was clearly not the same horse who had been the highlight of many Valley meetings. His performance yesterday indicated he has freshened up well through the recess, and connections will be hoping he can take the final step to the top echelon of sprinters in the next two months as we head towards the Cathay Pacific International Races in December.

Man will also be pleased with his untapped talent Five Clubs, who also came down the stretch in autopilot to finish a comfortable second to Young Supreme, who stopped the clock at 62.92.

Man hasn't managed to keep a poker face with this fellow, who was having his second trial this month, and is clearly being set for an early season kill off his rating of 64.

John Size may also be ready to open his account when Enriched turns up on raceday, with Whyte earning an easy riding fee for keeping a tight hold on the powerfully built 99-rater, who cruised into fourth.

The final trial was taken out by the David Ferraris-trained Darpana in 62.95 seconds.
