My Memory has rarely been a horse to attract the best of luck, but he gets his chance to shine at Happy Valley tonight in the Victoria Racing Club Trophy (1,200m). With one win from 14 starts, My Memory (Howard Cheng Yue-tin) has hardly been a prolific visitor to the victor's stall, but his five second placings tell more a story of ill-luck than a lack of conviction.
The Dennis Yip Chor-hong-trained gelding is at his best leading, but has often been forced to duel for the front from wide draws, then succumb to a late finisher and some of the horses to run him down late in a race last season included decent gallopers like Tai Sing Yeh, Legend and Soviet Pearl. This time he gets an ideal chance to put a trophy in his owner's cabinet with many of the runners looking out of form, high enough in the ratings or unsuited, none of which charges could be levelled against My Memory.
Resuming for the season, he had his chance behind the dead-heaters Sea Prince and Mr Vigorous, but gave every impression he would improve for the run.
Last time out, he didn't get the chance to show that improvement as he covered ground three wide in the race won by Bolero on December 8, but again was not too far away at the finish.
He has not been able to get to the front in either race, but fully fit and better drawn, My Memory's early speed can be used to good effect to find the lead and exert some control over his destiny with 113 pounds on board.
The John Moore-trained Elite Sixty Six (Darren Beadman) appears the most serious danger after being held up in the straight when fifth to Elite Fortune at Sha Tin last time.
