SPIRIT Of Boom showcased his vast talent at the Gold Coast but he needs to maintain the form to be retained as a stallion, reports Bart Sinclair in the Courier-Mail in Brisbane.

His report adds: For the moment Spirit Of Boom is saved from the gelding knife. The four-year-old's devastating finish to win the $100,000 Goldmarket Handicap in race record time for the 1300m sprint showed he is capable of winning in Group class.

Spirit Of Boom ($7) belied his lacklustre last start ninth in the Lough Neagh Stakes when he peeled to the outside early in the straight and in a few giant bounds swept past the leaders.

''He's been a terribly frustrating horse. I've been saying for a long time he is a top-class sprinter but his form didn't show that,'' Toowoomba trainer Tony Gollan declared. ''I just knew he had a lend of us last time. I just wanted a good track, a fast pace up front and see him get to the outside. He got that today and he blew them away. He's saved from the gelding operation. For the moment, anyway.''

Rider Ric McMahon agreed with Gollan that Spirit Of Boom resented being cooped up between horses in the Lough Neagh and didn't produce his best. McMahon cleverly positioned Spirit Of Boom in ample room, settling seventh with no horse to his outside and then out and in clear running early in the straight.

Short term Spirit Of Boom is now headed to the Magic Mllions Cup (1400m) at the Coast on Saturday week.
