Toowoomba trainer Tony Gollan is unlikely to extend Spirit Of Boom's spring campaign to include the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on Victoria Derby day in October.

Spirit Of Boom is in Sydney preparing for a two-start mission in Saturday week's Group Three San Domenico Stakes (1000m) at Randwick and the Group Three Up And Coming Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm on August 21.

Gollan is happy with the progress of his rising three-year-old whose trip away heralds the start of a long-range plan aimed at the Magic Millions Trophy (1400m) at the Gold Coast in January.

Spirit Of Boom hasn't started since finishing second to Pressday in the Group Two Champagne Stakes (1200m) at Doomben in May.

Pressday subsequently went on to win the Group Two Sires' Produce Stakes and Group One TJ Smith at Eagle Farm in June for Sydney trainer Chris Waller.

Gollan is delighted with Spirit Of Boom's improvement since he returned to work following a short break.

"He's had a couple of gallops already at Rosehill and a jumpout on the course proper," he said.

"He seems to have come back really well. He's a lot stronger now."

Gollan's main concern with Spirit Of Boom, who is set to clash with another Queenslander Buffering in the San Domenico Stakes, is the current wet tracks in Sydney.

"The tracks down here are pretty wet which is a worry," he said.

"He's won on a wet track but I've got no doubt he's much better on top of the ground."

Gollan is using Spirit Of Boom's trip away as an exercise to toughen him mentally for the $1 million Magic Millions Trophy.

"Hopefully a trip away like this will do him the world of good and will give him a lot of confidence for when he heads to the Magic Millions," he said.

"At this stage I'm only looking at these two races in Sydney and then he'll probably head home.

"There's a chance he might go on to Melbourne for the Coolmore Stakes but I'll see what happens in Sydney first."

Gollan has been to Sydney once previously with Socialist who finished seventh to Paulini in the Inglis Classic (1200m) at Warwick Farm in 2005.

"I brought Spirit of Boom down last week and he's settled in well at Rosehill," Gollan said.

"I've only gone away once before, with Socialist, but we didn't have much luck with him in the Inglis Classic.

"He wasn't a natural two-year-old and wasn't up to the task at the time."

Gollan is yet to engage a rider for Spirit Of Boom but is hoping Stathi Katsidis will be available.

Katsidis is committed to riding AJC Australian Derby winner Shoot Out every fortnight throughout his Melbourne Cup campaign but will be available to ride in Sydney on alternate weekends.
