RACING NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy believes the Investigations and Surveillance Unit announced on Monday will be more effective and relevant to racing in the 21st century, reports The Age/Sydney Morning Herald.
It says: After a Melbourne spring carnival that highlighted the problems off the track more than the great racing on it, Racing NSW has used the retirement of racecourse detective Bob Nicholson to revamp the integrity arm of the stewards department.
"Bob has been in his job for 22 years, and things have certainly come a long way in that time," Murrihy said. "His retirement gave us the chance to look at things. This unit will take on the challenges that racing is facing and will be more proactive when it comes to identifying and catching offenders. Once upon a time, swabbing the winner was about as far as integrity issues went, but we have definitely moved on from that these days, and this unit will be another step in the right direction.
"This unit will be proactive and forge liaisons with policing and Customs in an attempt to identify any illegal substances that are coming into the state.''
The unit will fall under the stewards' office control, and two positions will be advertised initially.
