FORMER Queensland trainer Shaun Dwyer had a thorough and meticulous grounding in the art of preparing horses, reports The Age.

It says: Some months ago, when Dwyer settled in Bendigo, friends questioned whether the 51-year-old could break into the toughest racing scene in Australia. But Dwyer had nearly three years learning his craft with two of the country's most gifted trainers and this prepared him for anything he may encounter as a trainer.

Dwyer will be at Moonee Valley tomorrow with his last-start winner Heartland, who, he says, is still to get to her optimum distance but he is hoping she can make it back-to-back victories after the mare was successful last Saturday at Caulfield. Dwyer, who has had many stable shifts in the past 14 years, believes Bendigo will be his permanent base and hopes to build a team of 30. ''I've trained at Ipswich, Brisbane, Mackay, Sydney, North Queensland, the list goes on, but I see racing going forward in Victoria more than anything else,'' he said.

''I don't think Queensland racing's going in the right direction, so I said to my wife, 'let's give Victoria a go', and at the moment that's working out well.''
