MOE trainer Peter Gelagotis yesterday confidently predicted that his emerging star Belgietto could become the best horse he's ever trained after the four-year-old scored in yesterday's Transport Handicap at Flemington, reports the Sunday Age.

It says: Over the past decade, Gelagotis has slowly built up a strong provincial team but believes that Belgietto may well be the horse to become the flagship of his stable.

''He's always been a horse with a few extra gears up his sleeve compared to the other ones I've got, or for that matter had. His wins at Bairnsdale and Sale showed that he's versatile and has a great future,'' Gelagotis said.

The son of Bel Esprit was passed in for $120,000 at the Victorian sales but was later syndicated by the Moe trainer, who liked the youngster from the first time he saw him.

''I don't have big numbers and I don't have the luxury of just continually turning them over as I don't have the pool of horses that some do,'' Gelagotis said. ''He's still immature with only 12 runs to date, so I'm just tempted to put him out and let him strengthen up that little bit more before going any further with him. But it's a bit tricky when you have a horse like him in form - and that's winning form - having to put him aside.''

Belgietto was friendless in the market, drifting from $4 to $5.50, but scored by three-quarters of a length from Nostoppinthemusic ($5.50), with the same margin to Unctuous ($16) third.
