Trainer Peter Gelagotis says Belgietto, potentially the best horse he has trained, is almost certain to miss Saturday's Sandown meeting and run at Flemington next month.

Gelagotis nominated Belgietto for the 0-89 Handicap (1500m) at Sandown but he is reluctant to jump him in class and back him up after he scored an impressive win against 78-class horses at Sale last Wednesday.

He said a 0-78 race over 1600 metres at Flemington on December 11 with Super VOBIS money attached to it held more appeal and would allow the Bel Esprit four-year-old to make a more gradual progression through his grades.

"I think he could be the best horse I have trained," said Gelagotis whose most notable performers have included Moe Cup winner Savquaw and Crying Storm.

"I could run him at Sandown but he is better placed at Flemington."

Belgietto has won three of his 11 starts and this campaign is unbeaten after wins over 1000 metres at Bairnsdale and 1400 metres at Sale.

"He is a fit, very athletic horse and doesn't need a much to keep him ticking over," Gelagotis said.

"He is a pretty decent horse."

Headline entries in Saturday's Sandown race are Kallogg with an 89 rating and Itsamonty and Wind Shear with 87 ratings.

Overtake, Laspiel, Silky Smooth, and Riveted are others among the 17 entries.
