THE Golden Rose performances of winner Denman and runner-up Trusting have not swayed Gai Waterhouse's opinion as to who is the best three-year-old in the land, reports The Age.

It adds: ''You'll see him down there (Melbourne) this Saturday and you can make up your own mind,'' she said yesterday. Waterhouse was referring to her invaluable colt Manhattan Rain, who arrived in Melbourne on Saturday for a tilt at the Caulfield Guineas, where victory in the $1 million classic would make it certain that he is one of the most sought-after stallion prospects for some years.

By the all-conquering sire Encosta De Lago, Manhattan Rain, who won the group 1 AJC Sires' Produce Stakes in between placings in the Golden Slipper Stakes and Champagne Stakes, is a half brother to super stallion Redoute's Choice. But Waterhouse said it was not just his bloodlines that stood this colt apart from the rest of his age.

''I've got no doubt he's the best three-year-old in the country,'' she said. ''He's grown into a magnificent colt and I'm just so excited at the prospect of what he could do not just this spring but next autumn. He's galloping at Flemington on Tuesday and that should have him spot-on for Saturday where he'll run in the Danehill Stakes to open up his Caulfield Guineas campaign.''

The Danehill Stakes is a group 2 $250,000 race over 1200 metres, one of the features of Saturday's Flemington meeting.
