Cox Plate runner-up Manhattan Rain showed his class to be the star of the Randwick barrier trials yesterday, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

It says: The three-year-old half-brother to Redoute's Choice led and raced away from Theseo to win by 3¥ lengths and is likely to resume in the Royal Sovereign Stakes at Randwick on February 13, with another clash with Denman in the Australian Guineas on the agenda.

''It was an outstanding trial and is probably the best he has ever gone in a barrier trial,'' trainer Gai Waterhouse's racing manager Robyn Hartney said. ''His turn of foot when Blake [Shinn] asked him for an effort at the 200-metre mark was the most impressive thing and I know Gai is very excited about what is ahead for him.''

Waterhouse wasn't at Randwick yesterday. On Thursday she paid $180,000 for a Fastnet Rock colt at the Magic Millions yearling sale in Perth, and will fly to Karaka for sales in New Zealand tomorrow.

However, the reports from the trials will bring a smile to her face, with Dreamscape beating an impressive Rock Kingdom and More Joyous in the second heat of the morning.

''I was very happy with Dreamscape and Rock Kingdom and Gai will decide where they are going next week but I think most of ours will have their first start on February 13 in Sydney or Melbourne,'' Hartney said.
