Exciting staying prospect Super Cool has returned to trainer Mark Kavanagh’s Flemington stables to begin preparations for the Spring Racing Carnival.

After having been back in his care for just a week, the star three-year-old of the 2013 Melbourne Festival of Racing has so far pleased the Melbourne Cup winning-trainer.

“He’s been at the pre-trainers for a month. He’s ready to have his work stepped up and we’re quite happy with his progress at this very early stage”, Kavanagh said of the Fastnet Rock gelding.

“We are keen to ensure he has a long preparation but (with the break) we were just as keen to ensure he didn’t get fat.”

Super Cool was one of the revelations of the 2012 Spring Carnival in winning the Group 2 AAMI Vase (2040m) on Cox Plate Day and performed well finishing second in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) where he was outstayed by the Anthony Cummings-trained Fiveandahalfstar.

He delivered on that promised during the Melbourne Festival of Racing by claiming the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) and Australian Cup (2000m), turning the tables on Fiveandahalfstar on both occasions.

As for which races Super Cool will target during the upcoming Spring, Kavanagh will hold off on that decision until he returns from holidays in early August.

“He’ll be nominated for all of the best races”, making reference to the big three Group 1’s: the BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m), Sportingbet Cox Plate (2040m) and Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m).

“You have to be open minded”, said Kavanagh on the question of which race might signal Super Cool’s return to racing.

“As we are seeing lately the weather also provides all sorts of uncertainties.”

The rising four-year-old is currently rated a $41 chance with TAB for the 2013 Emirates Melbourne Cup but as for pinpointing that race as the ultimate aim, Kavanagh is aware that history has only been partially kind to three-year-old Australian Cup winners.

“There has only been two horses that have won the Australian Cup as three-year-olds; one went on to win a Melbourne Cup (Saintly in 1996) and the other was going to but broke down (Dulcify in 1979).”

“I may have a horse that can’t run two miles, I’m not sure yet, but we’ll nominate for them and see what happens from there.”

Along with Super Cool, the imminent return of his exciting filly Atlantic Jewel sees the Kavanagh team priming themselves for the 2013 Spring features.

“With a lot of my Spring prospects returning to me from pre-training, hopefully there’s exciting times ahead.” (ex-www.racingvictoria.net.au)
