CHIEF steward Terry Bailey yesterday said he had reservations about the possibility of Racing Victoria Ltd introducing 30-minute breaks between races and have winning bets paid after the field has passed the post, reports The Age (www.theage.com.au).

Its report adds: RVL is believed to be strongly considering the two major changes for next season. The new system would rely on stewards telling betting operators to withhold payouts if they believed an inquiry could affect the result of a race.

However, Bailey said he was concerned by some features of the proposed changes. "I'm all for change if it means that betting turnover will improve and that having races 30 minutes apart will bolster the entertainment value of a day at the races," he said. "I can see where these changes could advantage the industry but, at the end of the day, both will affect my department."
