Guelph's little brother Ghibellines commenced his autumn carnival with a barrier trial win at Rosehill Gardens on Tuesday morning. Trainer Peter Snowden indicated the Shamardal colt would be given his opportunity to qualify for the Golden Slipper and rider Kerrin McEvoy was certainly impressed with the hit-out, reports Racing Network.

Ghibellines settled midfield before working clear in the straight and powering past his rivals in the final 200m, winning his 900m heat in 55.8 seconds.

"I just tucked him in behind and taught him a bit more, he was full of running without me asking too much off him in the last bit," McEvoy said.

"He has got a bit of a different action to him, he carries his head up a bit, I think he has strengthened up a bit more from the spring.

Asked whether he feels he is top grade, McEvoy replied;

"Obviously still got to do it, he is well bred and there are a lot of eyes on him because he is Guelph's little brother but he still has to show us he is good enough," he said.

"He is moving well and that trial was a step in the right direction."

Ghibellines won his first barrier trial at Randwick before finishing fourth behind Law in the Breeders Plate on debut.
