Michelle Payne lived a dream when she became the first woman to ride a Group One winner at Randwick, steering Yosei to victory in the Sires' Produce Stakes on Saturday.

Trained by Stuart Webb at Caulfield, Yosei ($18) outgunned Skilled ($11) in a fighting finish to prevail by a short half-head.

Payne had to use all her strength in the final 100 metres of the 1400m feature and even then she wasn't sure of the result.

"She really toughed it out but I didn't want to act as if I'd won because I wasn't sure," Payne said.

"It's amazing. This filly has come from nowhere and each time she has stepped up.

"She is so little and I'm just rapt. She's a little star.

"It's a dream come true to win a Group One race at Randwick."

Befitting her 10 out of 10 ride, Payne was photographed after the race with the original 10, Bo Derek, who is visiting Sydney for the Asian Racing Conference.

Webb, 40, is the right-hand man for prominent trainer Robert Smerdon at the Aquanita establishment and has just two horses in work.

"I knew she would be at her best at 1400 metres," Webb said.

"We didn't press on to the Slipper, this was the obvious race for her."

The heavily supported Toorak Toff, who started at $4.80 after as much as $26 was offered earlier this week, ran a half-length fourth just behind Hinchinbrook ($5.50).

Favourite More Strawberries ($3.90) was never a winning threat, finishing an even seventh.

But the honours were with Payne who rode her first Group One winner last spring when she claimed the Toorak Handicap aboard the Bart Cummings-trained Allez Wonder who she rides in next week's Doncaster.

"I don't ride a lot for Aquanita but I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time," she said.

"I'm sure everyone was trying to neck me but the owners and Stuart stayed loyal to me."

Skilled's rider Josh Parr was thrilled with the performance of his mount.

"He's turned into a really nice horse, he's competing in the best company and matching it with them," Parr said.

"Although he was beaten he was very brave."

Gai Waterhouse said Golden Slipper placegetter More Strawberries would now go for a spell with the spring in mind.

Hinchinbrook will also be given a rest.

"He ran terrific," trainer Gerald Ryan said.

"The chestnut (Toorak Toff) got three-quarters of a length on him and he's kicked back and beaten it home.

"He's going to the paddock now."
