Promising stayer Red Colossus is on a winning run and trainer Greg Eurell has every reason to be confident that it won't stop in Sunday's South Australian Derby.

The Testa Rossa gelding has won his last three starts, including most recently the Listed Chairman's Stakes (2014m), and according to Eurell is going from strength to strength.

"In all honesty you wouldn't have known he'd had a run last start," Eurell said.

"It obviously didn't have much effect on him and he's absolutely thrived."

Red Colossus has won four of his nine starts but only since he has been stepped up over ground has he started to deliver on his early promise.

After beating a midweek field at Sandown over 1600 metres on March 10 he successfully graduated to stakes racing at his next two runs in Adelaide, winning the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) and the Chairman's Stakes.

The Chairman's has been a traditional lead-up to the 2500m Derby with three horses landing the double including Rebel Raider last year.

Mummify (2003) and Markham (1997) also won both races while another five winners of the Chairman's Stakes have finished second in the Derby.

Eurell said Red Colossus had learned to relax with racing and was confident he would run out a strong 2500m.

"On everything he's done he certainly gives every indication he will run the trip," Eurell said.

"His last couple of runs have been tough and he's got to the line really well."

Even the barrier draw was favourable for Red Colossus who has gate two while the favourite Kidnapped, who was third in the Chairman's Stakes, drew the outside of the 16 runners and four emergencies.

Chris Symons has ridden Red Colossus every start and got a feel for the horse's class back in the spring when he was a three-length fifth to Carrara in the Group Two Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley.

Eurell said it was now all starting to happen for the gelding.

"He's learned a little bit more about the caper and it has all fallen into place for him this campaign," Eurell said,.

"The best part about him is that he's bouncing after his last run.

"It is unbelievable how well he's done. I couldn't fault him. He's spot-on."
