Trainer Greg Eurell will run Red Colossus first-up in midweek class at Sandown instead of taking on a far tougher task in Saturday's Group One Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield.

Eurell accepted with Red Colossus in Wednesday's Highways TAB Hcp (1400m) for which he is topweight with 58kg.

"It looks a good race to kick him off in with the small field and he races well at Sandown and it gives us three days up our sleeve to get a bit more into him before his next run," the Cranbourne trainer said.

The Testa Rossa four-year-old would have been assured of a start in the Rupert Clarke which can have 18 starters as he is 15th in the order of entry of the 20 nominations.

He is one of nine horses on the minimum of 53.5kg.

The in-form Doubtful Jack from the Peter Moody stable heads the weights in the Rupert Clarke with 58kg along with Gold Salute, Rightfully Yours and La Rocket.

Red Colossus hasn't raced since finishing a long head second to Kidnapped - also entered for the Rupert Clarke - in the Group One South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on May 2.

He won three straight before that including the Chairman's Stakes (2014m) at Morphettville in April, beating Token Of Honour and Kidnapped.

Eurell said he had intended to run Red Colossus in The Sofitel (1400m) at Flemington on September 4 but had to abandon that idea.

"He came down with a bit of a temperature and we couldn't run him so it messed up our plans a little bit," he said.

"We'll take it bit by bit but the options include the David Jones Cup - the old Coongy Handicap on Caulfield Cup day - the Mackinnon Stakes and the Sandown Classic."

Red Colossus is capable when fresh having won his maiden over 1200m at Ballarat on debut and he ran second in a Traralgon trial (950m) last Monday week.

Chris Symons, who has ridden the gelding in all of his 10 starts for four wins and a second, has been engaged to ride him at Sandown where he drew barrier three in the nine-horse field.

Meanwhile, two of Mike Moroney's promising three-year-olds, Comanche Kid and Brazilian Pulse, will take on the smart Lee Freedman-trained Typeface in the Friday After 3 At Highways Hcp (1300m).

The trio is still in the Group One Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 9 as is the David Hayes-trained Redoute's Choice colt Multahem who makes his debut in the Functions At Highways Hcp (1000m).

Comanche Kid, a Danehill Dancer gelding, won on debut over 1200m on the Geelong synthetic track while Brazilian Pulse, a filly by Captain Rio, made an impressive debut with a seven-length win at Ballarat on September 1.

Elusive Quality colt Typeface won by three lengths over 1108m at Sale at his second start on September 2.

Multahem faces two Freedman-trained last-start winners in Exceed And Excel filly Namaste, who won over 1000m at Morphettville on May 22, and Starcraft filly Youeffoh who won over the same trip on the Geelong synthetic track in August.
