Suspended jockey Craig Williams was entitled to feel heartbroken, but he was trying to look on the bright side.

"Let's look at the positives," he said after being forced to sit in his own living room and watch the horse he should have been on win the Melbourne Cup.

Less than 24 hours earlier Williams lost the ride on Dunaden - and a chance of racing history - because of suspension.

He was in line to claim the spring's biggest treble after riding the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate winners - instead he was serving the first day of a 10-day riding ban.

But he says he was still made to feel part of the famous victory, as his substitute Christophe Lemaire prevailed in the tightest finish in the race's 151-year history.

Williams hailed it as a triumph for both trainer and jockey.

"What a great effort by Mikel Delzangles," he said.

"He changed the horse's program around to suit the needs of the horse.

"And Christophe, he's a world class jockey and it was a great ride by him.

"I would have had to do a great job on the horse to win the race.

"The trainer, his staff and the owner all made me feel I was part of the team."

Williams rode Dunaden when the stayer burst into Melbourne Cup contention with his Geelong Cup victory.

But his dreams of adding the Melbourne Cup were shattered by a careless riding suspension from a minor race at Bendigo last week.

He tried twice to beat the charge and has vowed to continue his pursuit of success in Australia's greatest race.

Williams has had nine Melbourne Cup rides without being on a placegetter.

"I'll try and do it next year," Williams said.

Williams won the Caulfield Cup on Southern Speed and the Cox Plate on Pinker Pinker. Had he won the Melbourne Cup he would have been the first jockey to complete the treble in the same year.
