Trainer Michael Trinder was regretting that Morsonique didn't join his stable earlier after the nine-year-old scored an easy win in the Redditch Steeplechase at Sandown.

Morsonique only joined Trinder's stable at the start of this season after being formerly trained by fellow Tasmanian John Blacker.

He has now won three of five jumps starts, graduating from a last-start hurdle win at Warrnambool to land his steeplechase debut over 3400m at Sandown on Wednesday.

Ridden by Trinder's son Adam, Morsonique dominated the race and coasted home 2-1/4 lengths ahead of Our Santa, who finished fourth in the Australian Steeplechase, with Famous Prince another 2-1/2 lengths away third.

"I would have loved to have had this horse as a five-year-old," Trinder said.

"I think he would have been a star."

Trinder said Morsonique's age was his greatest problem but still believes that he is potentially up to some of the top jumps races in England.

But Trinder has no plans to tour with the horse overseas.

"I would leave that to someone else," he said.

"The good thing about him is that he loves wet tracks, runs forever and is very tough.

"The horse has a future and if you are looking for a horse for England later on then he would probably be up to a Cheltenham Gold Cup or something like that."

Morsonique will have his lead-up to next month's Grand National Steeplechase at Sandown in the Pedro's Pride Steeplechase (3400m) on July 28.

Adam Trinder compared Morsonique to Outstride who, trained by his father, ran second to Ivanhoe in the 1995 Grand National Steeplechase.

"I schooled him (Morsonique) at Sandown a fortnight ago and he jumped like a demon over the bigger fences," Trinder said.

Meanwhile, Moe trainer Allison Bennett has warmed to an attack on the Grand National Steeplechase at Sandown on August 15 with her nine-year-old Juan Carlos who won Wednesday's Mosstrooper Hurdle (3400m) by 4-1/2 lengths.

A last-start flat winner on the Geelong synthetic track, the gelding led most of the way to beat Vindicating and Grizz.

Bennett said Juan Carlos, who has won twice in seven jumps starts, would go for his steeplechase ticket at Yarra Valley next Tuesday.

"We are going to qualify him so we have got options," Bennett said.

Juan Carlos is Bennett's stable favourite and is on the comeback trail this campaign after injuring a tendon last November.

"He is such a beautiful jumper and he looks fantastic at the moment," Bennett said.

She said Juan Carlos would have one more run before the Grand National Steeplechase but was unsure whether it would be on the flat or over jumps.
