All-conquering three-year-old Whobegotyou became the first odds-on favourite for the Victoria Derby in six years when he stormed home to win the Group Two AAMI Vase at Moonee Valley.

Having his first start beyond 1600 metres, the Caulfield Guineas winner handled the step up to 2040m easily and it looks a formality that he will run out a strong 2500 metres in next week's Derby.

Jockey Michael Rodd said Whobegotyou still had a lot more to give after he romped home by 1-1/2 lengths from Buffett with Orca three-quarters of a length away third.

His time of 2:5.31 was only three-hundredths of a second slower than it took Efficient to win the Vase on his way to victory in the 2006 Victoria Derby.

"He took care of them pretty easily today," Rodd said.

"He was pretty arrogant and when they came around the turn he actually wanted to pull up and have a bit of a look so there was a fair bit up his sleeve when he finished."

The last six Victoria Derby winners contested the Vase with Efficient (2006), Plastered (2004) and Helenus (2002) winning both races.

Helenus was the last odds-on favourite at $1.90 in the Victoria Derby.

TAB Sportsbet slashed Whobegotyou from $2.25 to $1.75 for the Derby while Eskander's Betstar shortened him from $2.20 to $1.75.

Trainer Mark Kavanagh said he didn't have any regrets about not running Whobegotyou in Saturday's Cox Plate over the same distance as the Vase.

"If he was going to win the Cox Plate he should have won this by five (lengths)," Kavanagh said.

He said he was confident that Whobegotyou would run the 2500 metres in the Derby.

"I think he raced like a Derby horse today," Kavanagh said.

"He has been immature and I have been reluctant to push him but he's ready to come along now."

Rodd said he aimed to ensure Whobegotyou had a trouble-free run.

"He began really well which was something he doesn't normally do," Rodd said.

"I could have been a bit closer but I wanted to make sure I didn't have a horse near me or around me just to give him a nice passage into the race.

"Coming up to the half-mile (800m) they packed up and he was only a couple of lengths off them, and it was over pretty much after that."

Rodd said Whobegotyou was such a relaxed horse it was hard to see him not handling the Derby trip.

"It looks like the sky is the limit," Rodd said.

"He could go around with the hurdlers over 3000 metres and wouldn't get on the bit.

"He is just so laid-back you have got to squeeze him up to do anything."

Kerrin McEvoy excused the run of Spring Champion Stakes winner Sousa who tried to lead all the way.

"He worked too hard the whole way," McEvoy said.
