Leading Melbourne Cup contender Profound Beauty was beaten in the Curragh Cup but stablemate Chinese White gave trainer Dermot Weld plenty to smile about with victory in the Group One Pretty Polly.

The Pretty Polly was the main event on Saturday, the opening afternoon of Irish Derby weekend, and the final race of Chinese White's career.

The five-year-old Lady O'Reilly-owned mare is on foal to Cape Cross and had recorded placings at the highest level before Saturday's triumph.

"This is a very special moment," delighted trainer Dermot Weld said.

"I am thrilled to have trained a first Group One winner for Lady O'Reilly who has been a fantastic patron of ours down the years. I am also delighted that Chinese White is the mare to do it.

"Chinese White has been a fantastic servant, she has won at Group Two and Group Three level and has been multiple placed at Group One level before today.

"This is her last run and it is fitting that she should go out on such a high. She is in foal to Cape Cross and retires this evening."

Weld and Smullen were denied victory in the Curragh Cup when the John Dunlop-trained Tactic (5-1) held off the challenge by odds-on favourite Profound Beauty by two lengths in the Group Three race.

Runaway winner of a Listed event at York last month, the four-year-old Tactic confirmed himself a stayer on the up.

"I was worried about Mr Weld's filly as we know she stays well and has a turn of foot, but Mr Dunlop said our horse had come out of his last race very well and he is still on the upgrade," jockey Tadhg O'Shea said.

Profound Beauty remained a 16-1 chance with Irish bookmaker Boylesports for the Melbourne Cup after her second placing.

She ran fifth in the 2008 Melbourne Cup won by Viewed but missed the race last year.

Weld is the only European trainer to have won the Cup which he accomplished with Vintage Crop in 1993 and Media Puzzle in 2002.
