Weekend Hussler is only few weeks away from returning to the races but trainer Ross McDonald has not yet named the date for the champion's comeback.

The 2007-08 Horse of the Year courtesy of his six Group One wins during his three-year-old season, Weekend Hussler hasn't raced since he was found to be lame after being unplaced in the Oakleigh Plate won by Starspangledbanner in February.

That was his first start from 12 months on the sidelines recovering from a fetlock injury.

"He's about three or four weeks away," McDonald said.

"He's down at the farm at Mornington on the water walker and goes into work for four days a week.

"He's in the paddock during the day and coming along well.

"We'll train him differently this time and he will only run in a couple of sprint races this time but I'm not saying where just yet."

Weekend Hussler's last victory was in the 2008 Underwood Stakes (1800m) but he failed at his next two starts in the Turnbull (2000m) and the Caulfield Cup (2400m).

His rose to stardom with his victory over Scenic Blast in the Caulfield Guineas in October 2007 which was followed by another Group One success in the Ascot Vale.

He was undefeated the following autumn, stringing together four Group One wins in the Oakleigh Plate, Newmarket Handicap, Randwick Guineas and George Ryder Stakes.

An $80,000 yearling, Weekend Hussler has earned more than $3 million.

The injury to his off fore fetlock was rare and required stem cell treatment after he tore the sinovial pad which caused sinovial fluid to leak.

His six Group One wins as a three-year-old equalled Kingston town's record for the most in one season.

During that time, his success generated the formation of a fan club accompanied and Weekend Hussler merchandise.

Apart from swimming and working on the water walker, Weekend Hussler's rehabilitation has included dressage for which he has shown natural ability.
