Weekend Hussler has come through his leisurely exhibition workout between races at Caulfield with minor foot issues but trainer Ross McDonald says there's no cause for concern.

Race jockey Brad Rawiller rode the seven-time Group One winner in Tuesday's gallop with the gelding cantering off from the 1000m with stablemate Rack It Up, a winner of three provincial races.

The pair worked home in little better than even time over the final 200m but were certainly not out to run time and they finished on terms, with Weekend Hussler keen to go a lot faster.

The 2008 Horse-of-the-Year was bandaged in front and McDonald said it was the fastest he had galloped this time in.

"He wanted to do a bit but we have to be a bit careful with the track being a bit hard," McDonald said.

"I'm very happy with him this morning (Wednesday). The joint is good, we trotted him up and he has heat in the near (fore) foot and he did have a bit of a pulse to both (front) feet."

But the trainer said that was nothing unusual for Weekend Hussler who has been back at McDonald's Caulfield stables for a couple of months.

He began increasing his fitness by walking on the water treadmill and has done plenty of swimming as well.

The five-year-old has not raced since finishing fifth as an odds-on favourite in the Group One Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley nearly a year ago.

The big gelding suffered a rare injury to his off fore fetlock, tearing the synovial pad and causing synovial fluid to leak.

Weekend Hussler had shock wave therapy on the leg during his recovery.

McDonald has brought him along very slowly and hasn't yet named a race for his comeback but a Sydney autumn campaign remains an option, taking in the George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on April 3, a race he won in 2008.

He has also been nominated for the $1.5 million Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 17.
