Trainer Ross McDonald says he will make an announcement about the future of champion galloper Weekend Hussler on Wednesday.

The reigning Australian Racehorse of the Year has a recurring joint problem and McDonald wants the next two days to run tests and field expert veterinary opinion.

"It is just a little problem and we will make a statement on Wednesday," McDonald said.

Weekend Hussler has had a horror season since his all conquering three-year-old year, which featured six Group One wins.

Last spring he racked up his seventh Group One win in the Underwood Stakes (1800m) but failed to stay at his next two starts in the Turnbull Stakes and Caulfield Cup.

McDonald had hoped Weekend Hussler would emulate Rising Fast's 1954 feat of winning the Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup in the same season.

After those plans were shelved he decided to target overseas races in the autumn, including the Dubai Duty Free, but a back ailment followed by an off foreleg injury prematurely ended his campaign after unplaced runs in the Lightning Stakes and Australia Stakes.

Weekend Hussler was in pre-training when he suffered his latest setback.

McDonald was planning for the gelding to resume in a weight-for-age race in late August or early September however his army of followers may not see him race at all this spring.

McDonald has been committed to a cautious approach with Weekend Hussler and will not take any risks with him.

The son of Hussonet has won 12 of his 19 starts and more than $3 million in stakes.
