Warrnambool trainer Matthew Williams will try for his first black-type success with in-form mare Flying Tessie in the Listed Summoned Stakes at Sandown on Saturday.

Williams said the Testa Rossa four-year-old, who impressively won over 1400 metres at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day, was the best horse he had prepared to date.

The winner of five of her nine starts, Flying Tessie was picked out by Williams who paid $50,000 for her at the 2007 Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne.

He races the mare with a group of Warrnambool identities including Colin McKenna who was shattered when the David Hayes-trained import Changingoftheguard, who he also has a share in, was scratched from the Melbourne Cup on race morning.

Williams said Flying Tessie had bulked up during a winter spell and had come back a lot heavier for her current preparation.

Already a Sandown Hillside winner last February, Flying Tessie is after a hat-trick in Saturday's 1500m feature following a second-up win over 1203m at Geelong on October 21 followed by her 2-1/2 length win over Spirited Halo at Flemington.

Williams said Flying Tessie had trained on well since that win and he expected her to go close from her favourable draw in barrier four in the 16-horse field.

"She came home and ate up terrific and she's been kept mainly at the beach at Warrnambool and she had a gallop on the course proper on Tuesday morning and felt terrific," he said.

She was ridden by Craig Williams at Geelong and Kerrin McEvoy at Flemington, but Ben Melham, who has won two races on the mare, takes the reins on Saturday.

Flying Tessie was $5 equal favourite with the Mark Webb-trained Avienus, who is coming off a 1700m win at Flemington on Cup Day, ahead of Sparkling Satine and Rose Syrah at $6, Yesterday at $8 and Amberino at $9.

Williams said he had built his team up to 30 in work and had just put in a treadmill and water walker at his stables.

"Things are going terrific at the moment," he said.

Williams will also saddle up last-start Warrnambool winner Dashatin, to be ridden by Dan Nikolic, in the Cool Melbourne Plate (1700m).
