Chris Waller paid tribute to Nash Rawiller's "freakish ride" to get Our Cannavaro home at Randwick on Wednesday, just a day after the trainer gave the leading rider a "rev-up" at the Rosehill barrier trials.

"It just goes to show how great a jockey Nash is," Waller, who wasn't confident pre-race, said after Rawiller lifted Our Cannavaro ($10) to victory in the Renew & Win A Yaris Handicap (1550m).

However, Waller revealed he had words with Rawiller at the trials on Tuesday.

"He's just the best at educating a horse and we use him a lot (in barrier trials), but he just rode our triallers terribly," Waller said.

"It probably wasn't his fault, the track was poor, but all I could see was 200 dollars going past the post every time - that's what it costs to trial each horse.

"I said to him, 'What are you doing to me'. The horses were learning nothing."

Waller said Rawiller didn't know whether he was joking or not at the time but the pair had a laugh about it on Wednesday.

"It was our first little tiff, but he's made up for it today," Waller said.

Rawiller was able to get everything out of Our Cannavaro in the final 200m to run down the Gwenda Markwell-trained Turf Hero to win by a long neck.

"Nash just picked the horse up, and not from the last 100 metres but from the barriers," Waller said.

"He gave him a wake up from the barriers, got him into a fluent action and travelling, and then the last 100 metres he dead-set picked him up.

"It was a freak ride."

Rawiller was all smiles after the win and when asked about Waller's "rev-up" said: "Yeah he gave me a pay at the trials," before adding "I save myself for race day."

Our Cannavaro's win brought up a winning double for Rawiller after he guided first starter Squamosa to an impressive win for Gai Waterhouse in the Free Entry Today Handicap (1150m).

The three-length win got Rawiller off to a perfect start in his bid to hold off Corey Brown in the thrilling race for the Sydney jockeys' premiership.

Rawiller's double edged him four clear of Brown who rode the Allan Denham-trained Gosetgo to a first-up win in the Randwick Betting Auditorium Handicap (1150m).

Waterhouse said the Group One Golden Rose (1400m) on August 28 was being considered for Squamosa but the colt would have to prove he was good enough.

"He's nominated for the Golden Rose and he'd have to win a Saturday race next, which we will program him for in the next three weeks," Waterhouse said.

"Then he'll hopefully go on to the Golden Rose.

"This is Wednesday and it's a heavy track so I don't know (if he's up to the Golden Rose), but he's certainly above average."
