Canberra sprinter Voice Commander wrote his name into the annals of Toowoomba racing when he scored a bold win in the first Weetwood Handicap run on the synthetic track.

Voice Commander went into Saturday's $150,000 Listed event over 1300 metres with extensive experience on the artificial track having done most his of work on a similar surface in Canberra.

Winning trainer Nick Olive plotted a path to the Weetwood well before he sent Voice Commander north and he was rewarded for his persistence after the horse's defeats in the Eye Liner at Ipswich and the Glasshouse Handicap at the Sunshine Coast.

"This race was always a big part of the plan, especially because of the synthetic surface," Olive said.

"But he's had no luck at his past two runs and I knew he would be hard to beat today providing he didn't have to work too hard to get over."

Olive's fears of a frantic speed were quickly allayed when the horse easily found the front for the in-form Tye Angland and the 36-year-old trainer said he was supremely confident approaching the turn.

Voice Commander ($3.80 eq fav) responded strongly to Angland's urgings in the straight and the horse scored a decisive two length win over Bitabiff ($11) who found the line well after overcoming a chequered passage.

Michael Cahill briefly thought he was the winner when Goulburn sprinter Wasted Emotions ($5) ranged up to Voice Commander halfway up the straight but the horse struggled in the last 100 metres.

"It was a good run. He went up to win but he just felt the pinch the last bit and 1200 metres is probably as far as he wants," Cahill said.

Victorian Rockpecker ($3.80) started the equal favourite and finished a nose behind Wasted Emotions in fourth.

Voice Commander is raced by Olive's biggest client Neville Hambrook and the Commands gelding is the horse that started what is developing into a very successful partnership.

"We paid $55,000 for him at the Adelaide Magic Millions and he is the first horse Neville bought for me," Olive said.

"He'll have a break now and come back for the Magic Millions carnival in January.

"He ran third in the sprint last year and he's a better horse now."
