A perfectly-rated frontrunning ride by Kathy O'Hara has given Voice Commander an overdue stakes win in the Frank Underwood Cup at Rosehill and extended his repertoire to 2000 metres.

Trained in Canberra by Nick Olive, Voice Commander had been placed in two recent country features - the Ted Ryder Cup at Wagga Wagga and the Narooma Cup - lugging 60 and 61 kilograms respectively.

He got into the Listed Frank Underwood with the luxury of 53kg and O'Hara was instructed to lead to give him the best chance to run out the distance.

Voice Commander ($4.60) opened up a lead of around seven to eight lengths mid-race and still had 2-1/4 lengths to spare on Bid Spotter ($8) at the end of the race with Spinney ($4) another short half-head third.

"He's been carrying big weights in the country," part-owner Nathan Hambrook said.

"Nick has got him back to where he should be and he was spot-on for today.

"Kathy rode him exactly to instructions to give him a chance to run out the 2000 metres and he's done just that.

"Our original plan was to go to the Canberra Cup in November but it was wet and he just doesn't handle those sorts of tracks, especially with the weights he's asked to carry."

O'Hara said she was not aware just how far in front Voice Commander was mid-race.

"I was aware he was out there on his own but I didn't know how far, I just knew he was comfortable," she said.

"He's a seasoned campaigner, he's a very tough horse who uses his big stride.

"We thought it was the best way to get him to run the 2000 metres.

"They made a bit of ground late but they were entitled to take some ground off him.

"But he was too tough."

Prior to the Underwood, Voice Commander's biggest win was the 2009 Weetwood Handicap (1300m) at Toowoomba.

His eight wins before Saturday had been between 1000 and 1600 metres.

Voice Commander was also an acceptor for Monday's Moruya Cup (1930m) where he would have carried 60.5kg after Billy Owen's three-kilo claim.

Underwood favourite Alexander Of Hales ($3.70) led the rest of the field for most of the race but ran out of steam at the end, finishing fourth, 6-3/4 lengths from the winner.
