Trainer Rex Lipp will celebrate a family anniversary dating back half a century if Jussemi wins Saturday's Listed Toowoomba Cup.

Lipp has won the 2100-metre feature three times but it's not an historic fourth victory on the new cushion track that he hopes will have the champagne corks popping.

"I'd love to win the race this year as it's exactly 50 years since my grandfather, Dave Lipp, won the race with Blueden," Lipp said.

"My grandfather was a dairy farmer who died about 10 years ago but he owned and bred Blueden which won the Toowoomba Cup in 1959.

"I also bred and own Jussemi and it would be fantastic if we could win the Toowoomba Cup on my grandfather's anniversary."

Lipp's previous Toowoomba Cup winners were Gene's Interest (1999), Director's Special (2000) and Sir Sensible last year.

Jussemi was runner-up to his stablemate Sir Sensible in the 2008 Toowoomba Cup.

The six-year-old failed in his first two starts this campaign at Doomben and Eagle Farm before showing a glimpse of his best form when third to Armstrong Jones over 1600 metres on the Cushion track at Caloundra last month.

"It was a good run from him last time," Lipp said.

"He was last on the home turn and he flew home in his first start on a Cushion track.

"It was the first time he stepped foot on a Cushion track as our Cushion track in Toowoomba only opened for trackwork last week."

Lipp believes the Cushion track could hold a few surprises in the Toowoomba Cup.

"It's going to be a tough race and I think the lighter weighted horses could surprise a few people," he said.

"The race is restricted now to only 15 runners on the Cushion track and I think that's a good thing.

"The smaller field will give everyone a chance and there's no longer big fields of around 20."

Stathi Katsidis will ride Jussemi after landing the first winner of his riding comeback aboard Cicarelli at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

However, Katsidis' victory was soured when he was suspended for seven meetings for careless riding following the win.

Katsidis, who rode at Grafton on Thursday, plans to appeal the suspension which starts after the Toowoomba meeting.
