Secret Flyer broke a run of 15 outs since his last win 21 months ago and helped apprentice Ashley Thompson to his first city double at Caulfield on Saturday.

The topweight in the ALH Group Plate (1000m), Secret Flyer ($6.50) carried 54kg after the claim for Thompson and came from last on the slow (7) track to score by a half-length from Morgan Dollar ($13) with Beyond Pardon ($6.50) the same margin away third.

The Secret Savings seven-year-old hadn't won since scoring over 1000m at Moonee Valley in August 2009.

However the gelding had been placed in races such as the McEwen Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley, the Swisse Vitamins Stakes (1100m) at Flemington and the Hareeba Stakes (1200m) at Mornington since his last win.

Saturday's win was his 10th from 36 starts.

Colac trainer Mark Young said that after Secret Flyer had won a few races it elevated him into the better-class sprints.

He was tried in Group One class twice, finishing unplaced in a Newmarket Hcp (1200m) at Flemington and a Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

"A lot of those races were on firm tracks which didn't suit him and when they aren't winning they go down in the weights," Young said.

"We just had to wait for our chance and we got our chance today."

Young said he mainly potters around with Secret Flyer between races.

"We just poke around with him. We take him for a jog in a paddock around some hills to keep the weight off his front legs and he swims a lot," the trainer said.

"He's probably galloped twice in the last six months."

Young said Secret Flyer would have his next run in heat six of the All Victorian Sprint Series over 1200m at Moonee Valley on June 18.

Saturday's event was the third heat while the $150,000 Final (1200m) is run at Flemington on July 9.

Thompson won the previous race, the PFD Food Services Hcp (1000m), aboard the Ricky Maund-trained General Truce ($6.50).

General Truce also broke a run of 15 outs having not won since taking out the Group Three Maribyrnong Plate (900m) at Flemington in November 2009.

Maund said the Brief Truce three-year-old would now tackle the Listed AR Creswick Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on June 11 before being spelled.
