New Zealand trainer John Bary enjoyed Group One success with Jimmy Choux at the Sydney carnival and is looking to The Hombre to emulate his stablemate in Brisbane.

But Bary knows the four-year-old will need to bring his A grade form to the Doomben Cup (2020m) on Saturday against a quality field.

Jimmy Choux won the Rosehill Guineas to add to his New Zealand Derby but found it tough in the AJC Australian Derby and was sent for a spell.

The Hombre arrived in Queensland two weeks ago for his second visit to the winter carnival.

The son of Lucky Owners went into the 2010 Queensland Derby off a win in the Rough Three Rough Habit Plate and a second in the Group Three Grand Prix Stakes at Doomben.

He disappointed in the Derby (2400m), finishing ninth to Dariana.

"They were two good runs before the Derby," Bary said.

"But on Derby day the track was very firm.

"Three other New Zealand horses broke down that day and my bloke is a big horse and jarred up in the Queensland Derby."

Bary believes The Hombre is mentally and physically stronger this trip but isn't getting carried away with his chances against one of the strongest Doomben Cups assembled for some time.

"He's settled in well since he's been there and one of my staff has been riding him work," Bary said.

"He's really matured now and he's about 17 hands tall.

"He'll be competitive but to win he'll need to put it all together on the day.

"But I'm not scared about having a go."

The Hombre will be ridden by Jonathan Riddell who is also Jimmy Choux's regular partner.

"Jon is going over early to ride him work on Tuesday morning, hopefully on the course proper," Bary said.

The Hombre campaigned in Melbourne last spring but Bary has overlooked his three failures in the Geelong, Kyneton and Ballarat Cups.

"He wasn't in his best form in Melbourne. I think he was still growing and maturing," he said.

The Hombre has had three starts this campaign finishing in the placings every time in his homeland.

"He ran a big second at his first start back at Trentham," Bary said.

"I was real pleased with that run as he had 59 kilos and had no trials.

"He then ran second on his home track at Hastings with a another big weight before finishing third at Te Rapa last start.

"He drew wide that day and I would have preferred it to be 2000 metres. He's crying out for 2000 metres now."
