The decision to embark on an Australian Guineas campaign with Startsmeup will be put under the microscope in a Sydney stopover race.

Queensland trainer Bruce Hill says Saturday's Cleanevent Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill appeals as a genuine stepping stone to a Group One Melbourne campaign.

"There looks to be some depth to the Rosehill race so it should be a decent guide," Gold Coast-based Hill said.

Hill is in Sydney with three runners with Startsmeup accompanied south by the sprinter Leapfrog and maiden two-year-old Tehuti.

They will be ridden by claiming apprentice Luke Rolls.

Under the benchmark conditions of Saturday's 1400m race, Startsmeup was given 60kg but Rolls will offset the impost with his 2kg claim.

"I've used Luke with a fair bit of success and the horses won't lose anything," Hill said.

Paul Hammersley is Startsmeup's regular rider and he was in the saddle when the three-year-old ran second - beaten a length - to Torio's Quest in the Magic Millions Guineas at the Gold Coast last month.

The winner of two of his 12 starts, Startsmeup convinced Hill he was worthy of a shot at next month's Australian Guineas with his Magic Millions effort.

"He was beaten on his merits but against that he does prefer a dry track," the trainer said.

Startsmeup's Rosehill opposition will include Somepin Anypin, a 7-1/2-length last-start winner at the track.

Somepin Anypin dominates early betting at $1.75 ahead of last Saturday's Randwick winner Fast Clip ($4.80) with Startsmeup at $8.

Hill believes Leapfrog can earn his keep as Startsmeup's travelling companion in the Rosehill Gardens Event Centre Handicap (1100m).

"Everybody has got him down as a non-winner but he's been stiff a couple of times in some big races," Hill said.

Leapfrog is a genuine on-pace sprinter who parked outside the leader before winning over 1000m at Eagle Farm on January 22.

In 30 career starts, Leapfrog has won five times but has been runner-up on nine occasions with another two minor placings.

Hill will also start Tehuti in the Grand Pavilion Handicap, with the trainer saying the colt will relish a return to racing over 1200m.
