Trainer Tony Gollan is hopeful Spirit Of Boom can become the first Queenslander for a decade to win the Group Three Up And Coming Stakes at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Zariz was the last Queenslander to win the 1200-metre feature in 2000.

Gollan is delighted with the improvement from Spirit Of Boom since the colt finished fourth to Obsequious at his first start since May in the Group Three San Domenico Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on August 7.

Spirit of Boom will be joined in the Up And Coming Stakes by another Queenslander, Buffering, who left trainer Rob Heathcote's Brisbane stables on Tuesday.

Queensland-trained three-year-olds have won the Up And Coming Stakes on three other occasions - General Nediym (1997), Bulldog Yeats (1994) and Kinjite in 1991.

Gollan was delighted with Spirit Of Boom's performance on a slow track in the San Domenico Stakes and is hopeful of a better performance on firmer ground.

"I thought his run was outstanding in the San Domenico," Gollan said.

"He's not a horse who likes wet tracks and is much better on top of the ground.

"He's going terrific and hasn't put a foot wrong since the San Domenico and he's improved quite a lot since then."

Gollan has retained Jim Cassidy for Spirit Of Boom in the Up And Coming Stakes.

"Jim rode him in trackwork on Saturday and today and he's very pleased with the way he's come on," Gollan said.

Spirit Of Boom was one of the main fancies for the Magic Millions Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast in January following his seven-length romp in the Magic Millions Prelude a week earlier.

However, his Magic Millions hopes were dashed when he missed the start badly and was never in contention, finishing near the tail of the field.

The son of Sequalo subsequently displayed his true ability by winning the Listed Ken Russell Memorial at the Gold Coast before finishing second to Pressday in the Group Two Champagne Classic at Doomben in May.

Gollan plans to give Spirit Of Boom one more run in Sydney before returning home to concentrate on the Magic Millions Trophy (1400m) at the Gold Coast in January.

"He'll probably have one more run in Sydney in the Heritage Stakes then go home to prepare for the Magic Millions Trophy," Gollan said.

"I was thinking about taking him on to Melbourne for some of the better races down there but I've changed my mind."

Gollan may replace Spirit Of Boom in Sydney next month with stablemates Temple Of Boom and Listen Son.

"Temple Of Boom will barrier trial in two weeks before he resumes in early September but the weather will play a big part in whether he goes down," he said.

"He loves the wet and Melbourne would be an option as well if there's rain down there.

"He's a bit below the top grade on a dry track."
