Trainer Danny O'Brien believes he has got the timing right heading to the Victoria Derby with promising three-year-olds Spacecraft and Rockferry.

The colts are the only two horses remaining for O'Brien in the Classic on October 31 and Spacecraft kept his chances alive when easily winning Wednesday's Direct Alarm Supplies Handicap (1600m) at Moonee Valley.

"He is lightly framed but he is definitely a horse with good ability," O'Brien said.

"That was only his second race start and we will see how he goes in a couple of weeks (on Thousand Guineas Day) at Caulfield."

Last year O'Brien trained Buffett to finish fourth in the Victoria Derby at only his fifth start in his first preparation.

O'Brien's other Derby contender, Rockferry, is a brother to New Zealand champion Xcellent and last Friday at only his second race start romped home by five lengths over 2206 metres at Geelong.

"He was dominant at Geelong and is a very good stayer," O'Brien said.

He said he was happy to steer his young stayers away from the Caulfield Guineas which is shaping as one of the strongest in memory.

"The horses that are a few weeks behind the Guineas horses are the ones that make it to the Derby," O'Brien said.

"The other ones have done a fair bit when they run in the Guineas."

Buffett won his maiden at Geelong at his second start before he finished fifth in restricted company on Thousand Guineas day and second in the AAMI Vase (2004) leading to the Derby.

"It is still five or six weeks to the Derby but hopefully both horses (Rockferry and Spacecraft) will get there," O'Brien said.

Dan Nikolic rode Spacecraft at the Valley and had him in second place until rounding the turn where he urged him home to win by 2-3/4 lengths from Don Jose and Shahryar.

Nikolic said Spacecraft was Group class and that he had expected him to win his race debut when fourth at Geelong on September 11.

"He has worked good since his first run and it was good to see him win today," Nikolic said.

"He put himself in the race and relaxed and is only going to get better."

Meanwhile, Bart Cummings can plot a path to the Cups with a bit more confidence with last year's VRC Oaks placegetter Allez Wonder who returned to winning form in the Pacific Communications Handicap (2040m).

Ridden by Damien Oliver, she settled just off the pace and scored in a photo-finish from Dazzling Rubi with Leica Ding three lengths away third.

"She has always been one of our better ones but never has much luck," stable foreman Reg Fleming said.

"She hates wet tracks which didn't help her in the autumn."

Allez Wonder, who finished third to Samantha Miss in the VRC Oaks and was unplaced in the AJC Oaks, has raced 14 times for two wins, her first being at Kembla Grange in March.

She is among eight horses Cummings still has entered in the Caulfield Cup and 11 in the Melbourne Cup.

Fleming said the stable already had Dandaad and Precedence earmarked to run in the Group Two Herbert Power Handicap (2400m) on October 10 and that Allez Wonder could be a chance to join them.
