A new-found maturity has the optimistically-named Something Anything on the verge of realising a dream for his owners in the Group Two Villiers Stakes.

The five-year-old beat a small but classy field in Saturday's Sharp Handicap (1150m) at Randwick and did it with an authority new to his repertoire.

It was the fifth win from 31 starts for the gelding who has also racked up a frustrating 13 minor placings.

"He was a mental case as a young horse," trainer Gary Portelli said.

"But he has been working so well and I really thought he was ready to put it together.

"Like everyone else at the moment we want to go to the Villiers.

"There is a race over 1400 metres in a fortnight and that will be the line in the road.

"If he doesn't look like he can run 1600 metres then there is a race in Brisbane over 1350 metres that is part of the Summer Series that would be the other option."

The Villiers Stakes (1600m) is at Randwick on December 20, the same day as the Doomben feature.

Something Anything cost $40,000 as a yearling at the Classic sale and his enthusiastic group of owners led by Frank Mittiga is always on hand to cheer - win or lose.

"It's great to see him win and hopefully there's more to come," he said.

The Kevin Moses-trained Tenant's Tiara started the $2.40 favourite and led the field around the home turn but could offer little resistance when Something Anything ($6.50) loomed up on her outside.

Something Anything went on to beat the mare by 1-3/4 lengths with Bromide ($10) a short head back third.

Mister Celestial ran three lengths fourth with veteran Magic Marvo another half-length fifth on his return to the track after being put back into work when he proved too lively for retirement.

During the winter, Something Anything won over 1400 metres at Rosehill which was his first victory in his home town with his other three coming in Melbourne where Portelli operates a satellite stable.

Although disappointed Tenant's Tiara did not win, Moses still has much to look forward to with My Sweet Cookie also heading to the Villiers following his win over 1400 metres.

The victory was his second from two starts this preparation with Moses favouring a preparation aimed at around 1600 metres.

Last campaign he was tried over the 2400 of the Queensland Derby but finished a long last on the slow Eagle Farm track.
