I love it when I know the track conditions on a Thursday night as I can get started with my initial tinkering knowing I have plenty of time to assess the form. This week it will be a heavy track for Eagle Farm: that is fact and I have had time to make an assessment. This year I have the Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap down to 11 chances (well, it is that sort of race) with six of the runners just that little better off under the heavy track conditions.

My chances are
Marasco, Danleigh ,Snipers Bullet, Solo Flyer, Ortensia with the better wet trackers being Black Piranha, Bank Robber, Mr Baritone, Royal Discretion Something Anything and Vocalic. I would be foolish to suggest they are the only chances but we all have to draw the line somewhere and this is where I have drawn it.

Perhaps the surprise chances are Something Anything and Vocalic so I guess I had better provide a case for them. In these major Group handicaps I like horses coming off races where they carried weight X and drop several kilos. Something Anything, the 2008 Villiers winner, drops 5kg from his excellent run to Duporth while Vocalic drops a massive 7.5kg off an easy win with 60kg last start and 8.5kg off the run prior when beating a reasonable handicapper in Umaprince. Both handle the heavy track and if you look through the results of major handicaps over the years it is not unusual to note real roughies being placed. Why not again and Vocalic certainly fits the bill as a roughie! Something Anything has a better chance than most give credit for so keep him safe.

I will be boxing 2-5-6-13-14-19 for the AB position in the First Four with 14-19 for the CD positions using the flexi bet option and for the Trifecta as well. A simple box 6-13-14-19 exacta as a saver and why not again for the quinella. My win bets will be Something Anything, Solo Flyer, Royal Discretion and Vocalic to cover my exotics outlays.

I have had a look for some value in Perth. Try,

Race 3: Beau Rancher
Race 4: Captain Feathers
Race 6: It's Gulleygold
Race 8: Zhamenka

Small bets and minimum of double figures.

Good luck

BTW, Something Anything is my selection
