Racing officials remain committed to running Saturday's Stayer's Cup in spite of a limited entry list for the $100,000 feature.

When nominations closed on Tuesday only five horses were entered for the 3200m marathon at Rosehill.

The Australian Turf Club extended the closing time for entries until 11am on Wednesday and trainer Chris Waller added Our Cannavaro and Patrician's Glory.

But whether the pair join stablemate Strike One in the race remains uncertain because Waller has the option of withdrawing their nomination before Wednesday's second deadline.

Further late entries included the Victorian-trained Phaze Action, winner of the 3200m Andrew Ramsden Stakes at Flemington in 2009.

Under the rules of racing, club officials can abandon a race if there are less than eight acceptors.

But in the interests of trying to keep the staying-bred horse relevant to Sydney racing, such a move is unlikely.

"We will try to run the race if at all possible," ATC racing manager Colin Tuck said.

"It's only right that we keep faith with owners and trainers.

"Obviously a race like this doesn't come along all that often but we've had a 2800-metre race at Canterbury last week as well as the Winter Cup and the McKell Cup as lead-up races.

"The Queensland Cup is run over two miles (3200m) next week and maybe there's a bit of competition there but that was the case last year.

"Still, maybe it's something we can look at."

Dyed-in-the-wool stayers are becoming a novelty in most Sydney stables, leaving races beyond 2000m dominated by Waller and - to a lesser extent - Gai Waterhouse.

They were two of only four Sydney trainers represented by runners in this year's Sydney Cup with the Waller-prepared Stand To Gain beating Waterhouse's Older Than Time.

Strike One finished seventh in the race and will be trying for back-to-back Stayer's Cup victories.

Part of a string of stayers Waller has imported from the UK with ongoing success, Strike One will be out to arrest an 11-start losing sequence since he defeated Lang and Twin Wing on a rain-affected track in last year's race.

At his only start since the Sydney Cup in late April, Strike One was warming to the task late when fourth to Legsman in the Winter Cup.

Bathurst and Taree Cup winner Spence, Newcastle duo Sharbougg and Splendid Honours and Waterhouse's Reuben Percival completed the original entry.

Spence made the running over 2800m before finishing second to Patrician's Glory at Canterbury.

Healthy nominations have been received for the Rosehill support card, including 15 entries in the 1300m two-year-old race.
