Robbie Laing is better known for his feats with jumpers but will again demonstrate his versatility with two-year-old She's Got Gears in the Blue Diamond Preview for fillies at Caulfield.

The daughter of Invincible Spirit showed enough last spring to prompt the trainer to set her on a campaign aimed at the Group One Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 20.

A $45,000 yearling purchase at the Autumn Yearling Sale in Melbourne, She's Got Gears quickly lived up to her name winning the Ottawa Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day despite jumping away slowly.

Laing backed her up four days later and she ran third behind General Truce and Sweet Cheeks in the Group Three Maribyrnong Plate (1000m) at the same track before being sent for a spell.

"She's come up really well," Laing said.

"She hasn't had a trial, she's just had gallops. She'll run in the Preview and the Prelude on the way to the Blue Diamond."

Craig Williams, who won on She's Got Gears on Cup Day, will ride the filly who drew nicely in barrier two in the field of 13 after the scratchings of Namaste, Cuddles For Naara and Love In Spring for Tuesday's Preview.

Williams missed the ride on She's Got Gears in the Maribyrnong Plate through suspension when she gave away an eight-length start from the 600 metres with Blake Shinn aboard and stormed home to go down by less then two lengths.

The filly will be Laing's first Blue Diamond runner if she makes it to the race and she is shaping as the best two-year-old he has prepared.

Back in 1988 he trained Good Time Dancer to run third to Molokai Prince in the Magic Millions Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast.

Mick Price says he will be disappointed if Songspur can't run in the first three when he makes his debut in the colts and geldings Preview (1000m) on Tuesday.

A $210,000 Magic Millions Premier Sale purchase, the handsome Flying Spur colt is raced by the BC3 Thoroughbreds Syndicate.

"He's a nice colt. He won at the official trials at Cranbourne last October and more recently won a trial here at Caulfield," Price said.

"He's nice and sound and free of shin soreness, it's a bit difficult to measure what is going to be produced on the day because it is a Blue Diamond Preview.

"But he's had a really good preparation, he's trained up and he gets his chance to run in the first three and I'd be disappointed if he can't do that."

The Team Hawkes-trained Roulettes, unbeaten in two starts, is the $3.20 favourite for the fillies' Preview with TAB Sportsbet ahead of She's Got Gears at $4.80, Shaaheq at $5 with Crystal Lily and Cymbal next best at $8.

Songspur heads the colts and geldings Preview at $3.60 with Innocent Gamble at $4, Achievements at $5, Ello Ello at $6 and Marmaa next best at $7.
