Champion colt Sepoy is approaching "Black Caviar odds" as the field around him drops off in the Caulfield Sprint.

Chasing his ninth win in 10 starts, Sepoy has three less runners to contend with after the scratchings of Decision Time, Eagle Falls and Here De Angels in Saturday's Group Two 1200m handicap.

TAB Sportsbet opened the Peter Snowden-trained chestnut at $1.35 on Wednesday but on Friday he was $1.25 and could start even shorter.

TAB Sportsbet book manager Greg McDonald said the smaller field only made Sepoy even more attractive.

"There are less horses to worry about in the race and less chance of him suffering interference at the start or something like that," McDonald said.

"You look at the others in the race and you wonder how even the second picks (Mid Summer Music and Buffering) can beat him.

"He (Sepoy) will probably stay solid in betting but I wouldn't think he'd be shorter than $1.20.

"He is getting towards Black Caviar odds but he's won eight from nine starts and is probably entitled to be sort of mentioned in the same breath as her."

Last Saturday Black Caviar posted her 14th win from as many starts when one of the shortest feature race favourites ever at $1.07 in the Group Two Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy declared Sepoy 100 per cent, and when asked if he had any concerns said "no."

"He feels perfect. He's spot on. He's in good shape," McEvoy said.

He said his main objective would be to get Sepoy jumping quicker from the gates than he did last start in the Group One Manikato Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

His slow start at the Valley opened the door for Buffering to take on Sepoy for the early lead but the three-year-old was far too strong while Buffering tired to finish fourth.

Buffering is again in the field on Saturday as is another speedster Platinum Skye.

McEvoy said he would sum up the race after the gates open.

"We will see how it pans out and see how quickly the opposition go," McEvoy said.

Sepoy has drawn barrier one and McEvoy plans to make full use of the inside gate.

McDonald said TAB Sportsbet was "holding well into six figures" on the Caulfield Sprint with 95 per cent of all bets on Sepoy.

Sepoy would be the third three-year-old to win the Caulfield Sprint and with 55.5kg, he would smash the weight carrying record for his age.

Campaign King won with 52.5kg in 1985 and Jetspur had only 52kg when he won in 2005.

Buffering ($10) and Mid Summer Music, who has been backed from $11 to $10, are considered the best chances of an upset.
