Trainer Gerald Ryan has avoided taking runners to Grafton for the Ramornie Handicap because he figured the race was too hard to win but this year has brought a change of heart.

Ryan has set the stakes-placed Fangles for Wednesday's 1200 metre assignment and is confident the gelding can make the trip from his Rosehill base to the northern NSW town worthwhile.

Four-year-old Fangles comes into the race after rattling home to run a close third to Teasing at Rosehill on July 4.

He is set for a rematch with his last start conqueror as the Tim Martin-trained Teasing is also nominated for the Ramornie.

"I've never had a runner in the Ramornie, it's a race that I've always looked at as being just too hard to win," Ryan said.

"Fangles has done very well since the run and I think if a horse like Teasing is considered a good chance then so is ours."

Two starts back, Fangles beat just one runner home when first-up on a very heavy track at Gosford in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes won by Strat's Flyer on June 24.

"His first-up run was on a bottomless track but his run at Rosehill was very impressive," Ryan said.

"He'll improve from that and I think he's got a great chance."

Fangles will be chasing his first victory at Listed level in the Ramornie but he was stakes placed last preparation when he ran three-quarters of a length second to Hairy in the Carrington Stakes (1100m) at Randwick on New Year's Day.

He followed that with a fourth to Gold Trail at Rosehill and was spelled after failing to beat a runner home at Randwick on January 24.

"The break did him the world of good, there were problems with him," Ryan said.

"We're very happy with the way he's come back, the Ramornie is the race we've set him for."

Fangles has 53kg in the Ramornie with weights headed jointly by grand campaigner Mitanni and the classy Fighting Fund who each have 58kg.

Mitanni is an unlikely starter after finishing fifth to Voice Commander in the Weetwood Hcp at Toowoomba on Saturday.

Up-and-coming galloper Battlefield, the in-form News Alert and Eye Liner Stakes runner-up Mr Hornblower are also among the 27 entries with the final field to be declared on Monday.
