Jockey Michael Rodd confessed he felt like throwing up mid-race as he rode Efficient to victory in last year's Melbourne Cup.

Rodd said he had been wasting hard to ride a lightweight runner at the Cup meeting and that he was in pain as Efficient held on to beat Purple Moon by a half length,

"I was burning through the run," Rodd said. "I felt physically ill at about the half mile (800m).

"I really wanted to pull up and have a bit of chuck.

"When I went past the winning post every part of my body was hurting."

Rodd said the Cup was both mentally and physically demanding, but the high he got winning was worth it.

"Coming up the straight and just about to hit the front I just couldn't believe it," Rodd said.

"There were so many emotions. I guess I was just stunned when we went over the line. It was just such a high."

Ice Chariot will be Rodd's third Melbourne Cup ride after he also partnered eighth-placed Activation in 2006.

Only five jockeys have won the Cup in successive years on different horses with Harry White being the last on Arwon (1978) and Hyperno (1979).

Glen Boss was the fourth rider to win the Cup on the same horse in successive years when he landed three in a row on Makybe Diva (2003-05).

Ice Chariot was on Monday an outsider at $71 but Rodd said he had some positive signs going in to the Cup.

"What we have up our sleeve is that he has won over 3200 metres and he is in career best form," Rodd said.

On Saturday Ice Chariot worked home well for fifth to Theseo in the Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) after finishing third to Gallopin in the Moonee Valley Cup (2500m).

"All his lead-up runs have been very good and Saturday's run was just outstanding, the ground he made up off a slow tempo," Rodd said.

"He is going to need his fair share of luck from his barrier (21), but if we can get a soft run through the race and not have to spend a penny until the 300 metre mark he is a chance.

"He has a really good burst."
