Jockey Michael Rodd remains optimistic We're Gonna Rock can deliver on his potential and cope with the extra distance in Saturday's Group One Toorak Handicap at Caulfield.

Trainer Mark Kavanagh will use a tongue tie on the Fastnet Rock four-year-old in the 1600m feature after his disappointing fourth in last Sunday's Listed Superstable Stakes (1400m) at Flemington.

The performance mystified Rodd who felt We're Gonna Rock was going to win until he hit the wall in the home straight.

"He ran up to win, then ducked in and didn't finish the race off," Rodd said.

"He was going to go past them but instead wilted out of it which wasn't like him.

"He has been acquitting himself well but we think he might have choked down last start.

"We are just hoping the tongue tie will do the trick this week."

We're Gonna Rock's ability has been the subject of much speculation.

Kavanagh has long held the view he was a quality galloper but the entire has been a slow learner and getting him to deliver has been a problem.

His two wins in six starts have been at 1000 metres at Flemington and Geelong and thoughts that he may be a Cox Plate candidate evaporated last month.

However an encouraging fifth to Response in the Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield three weeks ago suggested a feature race win was not beyond him.

"We are still learning about him," Rodd said.

"We have thrown him in the deep end and he has handled himself pretty well.

"He feels like the mile (1600m) is not going to be problem for him but the worry is he did stop the other day.

"If we have fixed that I'm sure he can run well.

"He has got gate six so we should be able to possie him in behind them somewhere and hopefully he can finish it off."

Kavanagh and Rodd have been the emerging players in the Group One feature races on Guineas day for the last three years.

In 2007 Maldivian won the Yalumba Stakes and Divine Madonna landed the Toorak, while Whobegotyou won the 2008 Caulfield Guineas and the 2009 Yalumba Stakes.

Whobegotyou is again the headline act for the Kavanagh-Rodd combination on Saturday as second favourite to So You Think in the Yalumba while We're Gonna Rock is at $21 for the Toorak.
