When Wendy Roche took over the training of infamous barrier rogue Here De Angels she knew she was in for a challenge.
She just didn't realise how big.
"I didn't think it would be as big a challenge as what it was," Roche said.
"He came from two of the country's biggest stables, I didn't think I was any better or any worse than them but I thought being a small stable I could be hands-on and give him the attention to detail he needs."
Eight-year-old Here De Angels will have his second start for Roche in the Group Three Missile Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.
There has never been any doubt over the multiple Group winner's ability but his barrier manners had been a constant headache for previous trainers Lee Freedman and Mark Kavanagh.
Indeed, it took Roche eight months to figure out exactly what cajoling was needed to get Here De Angels into the gates and to get him to stay there - calmly.
But she is confident she has finally figured him out and says she won't be nervous as he is being loaded for the Missile.
"No, as long as the protocols I've strategically set are carried out in every trial and every race," she said.
The protocol involves Here De Angels having a double clip lead, an attendant in front of him to guide him into the barriers and, once he is in the stalls, his head turned to the side and an ear twitched.
While the gelding is high maintenance at the barriers, he is anything but in other facets of his life.
"He's like a kid's pony at home and he's like that at the races too when he's in the enclosure. He's really quiet," Roche said.
Here De Angels resumed with a sound seventh to Jerezana in the Ramornie Handicap at Grafton on July 13 when he drew the outside gate and had little luck.
Roche said he would take plenty of benefit from the run, his first since September last year.
The 33-year-old has only been training in her own right for 2-1/2 years and has five horses on her books, including former Lloyd Williams-owned gelding Tindal.
She has an equestrian background but has worked in the racing industry for many years, as a foreperson and trackwork rider, although she did take some time out a few years ago to dabble in barramundi farming.
If Here De Angels can get back to winning form in the Missile on Saturday, Roche will no doubt find bigger fish for the Group One placegetter to fry in the spring.
