Erratic galloper Here De Angels has pulled out a record-breaking run to win the Group Three Rubiton Stakes at Caulfield.

Sporting a nose roll and earmuffs which gave him a rabbit-like look, he raced three wide after a tardy start and reeled in Lucky Secret in the last 100 metres to score by a head in Saturday's 1100m feature.

Here De Angels' winning time of 1:1.73s eclipsed Intelligent Star's track record of 1:1.86 and has set him for a tilt at the Group One Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 20.

"I suppose we have to look at the Oakleigh Plate with him now," trainer Mark Kavanagh said.

"You have got to keep poking along and see what happens but Caulfield is his favourite track."

Kavanagh said the earmuffs had helped settle down Here De Angels who can get stirred up on race days and who is a noted barrier rogue.

"You put that little hat on him, the earmuffs, and he's a happy horse," Kavanagh said.

"He is a sound horse with plenty of ability but he does have a few issues. He is a little eccentric so he and I get on all right."

Jockey Michael Rodd said Here De Angels had a few tricks and didn't jump from the barriers as well as he liked.

"He was pushing back when the gates opened and didn't hit the ground running," Rodd said.

Lucky Secret was three wide as he vied for the lead with Avenue and Happy Glen but was able to get past them in the straight.

He got to the front at the 100 metres but jockey Nash Rawiller said he knew he was a sitting duck for a late challenger when Avenue suddenly dropped off.

Here De Angels swooped and in the last two strides snatched victory while Rostova finished a half-length away third.

Rawiller said Lucky Secret, who was beaten in a photo-finish in last year's Oakleigh Plate, was as gallant as ever.

"I thought it was probably the run of his career," Rawiller said.

Avenue, who had won four of her five starts, tired to finish fifth while Thousand Guineas winner Irish Lights was sixth.
