Win or lose, trainer Brent Gillovic will be fighting to hold back tears after Kiwi mare Wealth Princess starts for the last time for the stable in the Group One Winter Stakes at Eagle Farm.

Gillovic is set to lose Wealth Princess to Melbourne trainer Lee Freedman after Saturday's 1400-metre feature, the last Group One race of the season.

Wealth Princess was bred by Hong Kong businessman Victor Ngai at Gillovic's Highview Stud near Hamilton in New Zealand.

The famous stud is renowned as the birthplace of Group One winners Let's Elope, Tycoon Lil and Richfield Lady.

Gillovic has trained Wealth Princess for all of her 10 starts which have produced six wins and three placings.

A Group One victory narrowly eluded the daughter of San Luis when she was runner-up to Lord Tavistock in the Group One Waikato Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa in February.

Gillovic treats Wealth Princess like a family pet and admits the Winter Stakes will be an emotional time when she has her final start for him.

"This mare has been like a pet to me," Gillovic said.

"I'd be telling lies if I said there won't be a tear in my eye after the Winter Stakes."

Wealth Princess came to Australia with huge wraps on her but made a horror debut when narrowly beaten as odds-on favourite on a rain-affected track at Caloundra on May 9.

However, she made a mockery of that form with a runaway win in the Group Three Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) at Doomben on May 22 before finishing third to Set For Fame in the Group Two Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 5.

Gillovic's original plan with Wealth Princess was to qualify her for the Group One Stradbroke Handicap but she missed out after her campaign was disrupted.

"We've had nothing but bad luck with her over here," Gillovic said.

"When she was about to arrive by plane the airport was closed because of fog and she had to circle Brisbane for an hour.

"She and a few others on the flight got badly worked up."

Wealth Princess was later under an injury cloud with a badly lacerated tongue prior to her Dane Ripper Stakes placing.

"We had to treat her and there's no doubt she would have felt a bit flat for that run," Gillovic said.

"She ran a terrific race under the circumstances. She peaked on her run near the line but she was entitled to."

Gillovic has no doubt the best is yet to come from Wealth Princess who will again be ridden by New Zealand jockey Michael Walker in the Winter Stakes.

"She's as fit as I can get her for the Winter Stakes but when she comes back next campaign in the spring you'll see her right at her best," he said.
