Delago Bolt's optimum distance will become clearer to trainer Gary Portelli after the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.

Portelli said the colt had reached a fork in the road ahead of Saturday's Group Three race over 1400 metres, 200 metres less than the Caulfield Guineas on October 10.

"Is he a Caulfield Guineas horse or is he just predominantly a sprinter?," Portelli said.

"We'll find out this weekend."

Delago Bolt made up plenty of ground when fourth to Black Caviar down the straight at Flemington in the Group Two Danehill Stakes (1200m) on September 5.

The run was in contrast to Delago Bolt's performance one start earlier at Randwick when he ran off the track on the home turn in the Up And Coming Stakes on August 22.

Stewards ordered the horse had to trial around a turn before racing again around a turn.

"He's been given the all-clear after a barrier trial last Friday," Portelli said.

"He got around the Melbourne way without any problems, we gave him a fairly easy gallop and he's spot on."

Portelli was happy with effort in the Danehill under the circumstances.

"We had to forfeit the win when we drew barrier nine of nine," Portelli said.

"We had to get back too far. If he'd have drawn a better gate we could have had him about midfield with some cover and hopefully he could have run them down.

"He finished off very strongly, he's just got to have some luck this horse."

Delago Bolt has raced without luck for the bulk of his eight-start career.

He was checked near the 1200 metres when sixth in the Sires' Produce at Randwick in April.

The run followed his ninth two weeks earlier in the Golden Slipper where he was checked a couple of times from the 800 metres.

In March, he showed what he could do with clear running when he flew home from near last to win the Listed Black Opal Stakes (1200m) at Canberra.

Steven Arnold again rides Delago Bolt who jumps from barrier seven of 12.

TAB Sportsbet has Warwick Stakes winner and Golden Rose runner-up Trusting as its $4 favourite for the Prelude.

The Leon Corstens-trained Starspangledbanner is the second favourite at $5.50.

AJC Sires' Produce winner Manhattan Rain from the Gai Waterhouse stable is next in betting at $6 while Delago Bolt is at $11.

Golden Rose winner Denman is the $4 favourite for the Caulfield Guineas with Trusting the $8 second elect.

Delago Bolt is rated a $21 chance.
