The Golden Slipper hopes of Delago Bolt go on the line in the Black Opal Stakes with the colt's trainer Gary Portelli aiming for his third win in the Canberra feature.

Portelli won the 1200m Listed race with Coral Salute in 2001 and Down The Wicket in 2006 while Typhoon Fury finished second last year.

Delago Bolt is named after the world's fastest man, Beijing Olympic 100-metre gold medallist Usain Bolt, and had a solid barrier trial win at Warwick Farm on Friday when he ran the 1200 metres in a time of 1:11.90.

Chris Munce rode Delago Bolt in the trial and will also be aboard for next Sunday's race.

"He beat his stablemate O'Crikey in the trial, so that was very pleasing and the time he did it in was very good too and he'll go to Canberra with a great chance," Portelli said.

"The good thing is that we won't have to work him between now and Sunday, otherwise we would have been going there four weeks between runs.

"I think I've got the right horse and now it's just a matter of getting the right barrier."

Coral Salute ran 15th of 16 in the 2001 Slipper won by Ha Ha, Down The wicket was sixth in 2006 behind Miss Finland while Typhoon Fury ran 10th.

Delago Bolt broke his maiden at his third start with a comfortable 1-1/4 length win over Flying Spin in the Golden Slipper Festival On Sale Handicap (1200m) at Rosehill on February 7.

There was plenty of merit in his previous runs when he finished fifth on debut to Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up Real Saga in the Listed Breeders Plate (1000m) in October then ran a half-head second to Master Gaze over 1100 metres in January.

If Delago Bolt doesn't measure up in the Black Opal, Portelli will consider a Queensland campaign.

"I think he would be very competitive in the Brisbane winter carnival and could be a dominant colt in the Group races up there," Portelli said.

"But we all want a runner in the Golden Slipper and I've said to the owners if we wins this race well then we'll go to the Golden Slipper but if he doesn't win then we'll look up north."

The Golden Slipper (1200m) is at Rosehill on April 4 and TAB Sportsbet has Delago Bolt a $51 chance for the $3.5 million race.
