Cocky Raider is facing a test of his Group One credentials at Rosehill on Saturday but trainer David Payne has also warned not to underestimate stablemate Bushcraft.

Both two-year-olds will start in the Masterton Homes Handicap (1400m) with a trip to Queensland for next month's TJ Smith among their options.

While Cocky Raider is expected to prove hard to beat, Payne was reluctant to split the pair.

"The other horse (Bushcraft) is a nice improving colt," Payne said.

"He's been on a couple of wet tracks and I think he will also appreciate a dry track.

"I don't think there's much between them."

Cocky Raider has won one of his five starts and has had four weeks between his latest appearance in the Group One Champagne Stakes (1600m) where he was seventh, beaten almost 10 lengths on a heavy track.

Before that he was runner-up in both the Group Three Baillieu Handicap (1400m) and then the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m).

"He is fit and well and I've got a set of blinkers on him tomorrow," Payne said of Cocky Raider.

"He would probably have to win to go to Queensland for the TJ Smith, so that's his test tomorrow."

Payne said Cocky Raider didn't handle backing up within seven days in the Champagne Stakes so he has ruled out starting him in both the Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) and TJ Smith (1600m) in Brisbane.

"He would only go up for the TJ," the Rosehill trainer said, adding the gelding would appreciate getting on a dry track at Rosehill.

Payne hasn't ruled out also sending Bushcraft to Brisbane.

Bushcraft struck a heavy surface on debut on Anzac Day when third to Jackpot Queen at Randwick and then ran third to the Chris Waller-trained Subarc on the Kensington track last time out.

"If he steps up I would go to the TJ as well. I've nominated him," Payne said.
