David Payne has mixed feelings but high hopes about his stable's runners on wet tracks in Sydney and Brisbane this week.

Big Red Cat heads to Canterbury on Wednesday having won on a heavy track at Warwick Farm last start, debutant More Than Great also runs at that meeting while Baci Amore tackles the Group Two Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

While Baci Amore failed to fire on a wet track at Randwick last month, Payne cited his second to Rockdale in the Group One TJ Smith Stakes at the corresponding Eagle Farm meeting a year ago as encouragement for his chances.

"It's a Group race after all and one worth running in," Payne said.

"He got through it in the TJ last year so hopefully he can produce his best again."

Rockdale produced his best effort since the TJ Smith when he won the Rough Habit Plate (2020m) at Doomben on May 23 to put himself well in contention for the Group One Queensland Derby (2400m) on Saturday.

Weight not wet may prove the biggest danger to Big Red Cat in the Grey Gums Hotel Handicap (1550m) where he gives the Chris Waller-trained The Embassy four kilos, 1-1/2 more than when he beat him by three-quarters of a length at Warwick Farm last week.

"I think the one to beat is definitely the one who came second to him last time," Payne said.

"Chris' horse gets in with the 54 kilos but we do know Big Red Cat can handle the wet track."

Big Red Cat will be ridden by Nash Rawiller who also takes the mount on More Than Great in the Freeway Republic Beer Handicap (1200m) for two-year-olds.

More Than Great won his only barrier trial on May 14.

"He went well in the trial but it was a fairly slow heat," Payne said.

"But he's drawn well in five and being by More Than Ready you have to be confident he can handle the wet."

More Than Ready is the sire of the past two Golden Slipper winners Sebring and Phelan Ready, both of whom won the rich race on heavy ground.

Canterbury was rated a heavy (8) on Tuesday afternoon.
