John O'Shea will unveil new stable acquisition Smokin' Gun at Randwick and believes the former New Zealander is a lovely staying horse in the making.

Smokin' Gun will have his first Australian start in the Paddington Handicap (1400m) at Wednesday's meeting on the Kensington track.

The four-year-old was transferred to O'Shea's stables after finishing down the track in the Group One New Zealand Derby (2400m) in March.

Smokin' Gun won two of his eight starts across the Tasman and has been nominated for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

"He's a very nice horse," O'Shea said.

The Randwick trainer followed Smokin' Gun's progress last season and said some of his early runs as a three-year-old were very good.

"We'll probably be inclined to ride him a little quieter," O'Shea said.

"I think he'll make a lovely mile and a half (2400m) horse."

O'Shea already has Group One winners Zabrasive and Jessicabeel headed towards the major Cups.

The Randwick trainer said he would look to take Smokin' Gun through his grades before possibly trying to sneak into some better staying races "through the back door".

Three-year-old stablemate Private Label will step up to 1550m in the Moore Park Handicap on Wednesday after finishing strongly to win a two-year-old maiden over 1400m on the penultimate day of last season at Warwick Farm.

Private Label is also showing promise as a staying type, according to O'Shea.

The Gloaming Stakes (1800m) has been earmarked as a likely race for the son of Benicio.

The Kensington meeting will also see the return of last season's premiership-winning jockey Nash Rawiller after an illness-enforced two-week layoff.

Rawiller will ride debut winner Pureness, a half-brother to Golden Slipper winner Sebring, in the Paddington Handicap while unraced colt Memorable Moment will make his debut in the Zetland Handicap (1150m).

Gai Waterhouse's racing manager Mark Webbey said both had shown enough to suggest they would take a power of beating.

Rawiller spent the first two weeks of the new season resting and recovering from pneumonia but was back riding work and trials on Monday and has three rides at Randwick.

Meanwhile, the Australian Jockey Club meeting scheduled for Randwick next Tuesday (August 24) has been transferred to Hawkesbury to give the Randwick course proper more time to recover ahead of the Chelmsford Stakes meeting on September 4.
