Trainer Bill Smart hopes the benefit of a last-start ride on Silent Surround has jockey Damien Oliver primed to improve on his Thousand Guineas record.

Oliver, who has won the Group One fillies' feature at Caulfield four times including three of the past six years, was so impressed with Silent Surround in the Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) at Flemington he has eagerly taken the ride again on Wednesday.

"I am tickled pink that he wanted to ride her again," Smart said. "He was very keen.

"He just didn't know the horse last time."

Silent Surround was the unlucky runner of the Manifold on October 3 when she came from last on the home turn to finish a length third to Majestic Music.

Her last 400 metres of 22.86s was one of the fastest of the day.

"Caulfield probably won't suit her ideally on Wednesday but with Ollie on board in a Group One race he will give her good shot," Smart said.

Oliver celebrated his 2000th winner and his 86th Group One on Saturday when he landed the Yalumba Stakes on Whobegotyou.

Silent Surround has barrier one in the Guineas and is $11 with TAB Sportsbet while Irish Lights in gate eight dominates the market at $2.50 ahead of Sister Madly ($6).

"She (Silent Surround) has drawn the inside but I don't think it will matter too much," Smart said.

He envisages that Oliver will be able to position her midfield on the rails and then work his magic.

"He is just so good at weaving through. He's unbelievable."

Smart agrees that Irish Lights is the horse to beat but he believes that if Silent Surround can get within striking distance of her in the run she would be a chance to match her in the sprint home.

"Obviously she is a bloody good horse but I reckon if our filly gets a decent crack she won't be far away from her with a bit of luck because she can run good sectionals.

Smart planned the major spring fillies' races culminating in the VRC Oaks for Silent Surround as far back as May when she narrowly won the Group Three SAJC Sires Produce Stakes.

Last year Rebel Raider underlined the race as a spring pointer when he won the Sires' Produce and went on to win the Victoria Derby.

Sires' winners to shine in the VRC Oaks have included Anamato (2006) who ran third, Lashed (2002) who was second, and Li Lo Lill (2001) who ran third.

"The goal is the Oaks and I am sure she will get better as she goes further.
